Panel furniture is one of the most important types of assembled structural

Furniture with cabinet-like structures, such as wardrobes, kitchen cabinets, bookcases, etc., are assembled from components including top panels, bottom panels (feet), side panels, shelves, back panels, drawers, and door panels, using different joining methods.

I. Joining Structure Between Side Panels and Top (Face) Panels

In cabinet-like furniture, the panel that is higher than eye level (domestically defined as 1600mm) is called the top panel, while the one lower than eye level is called the face panel. There are two types of mating

1. '32mm System

It is a structural and manufacturing system for furniture constructed using a 32mm modulus through modular and standardized 'interfaces'. It is determined based on the distance between spade drill bits; the axial distance between meshing gears of the spade drill does not fall below 30mm, rounded to the nearest whole number as 32, which is a multiple of 2, offering flexibility and versatility.

Not all dimensions of furniture are multiples of 32, but

II. Basic Joining Structure of Shelves with Side Panels and Partitions

Shelves are horizontal panels installed inside cabinets to horizontally divide the cabinet space for storing items. Their thickness ranges from 16 to 25mm, and they come in fixed and adjustable types. Fixed shelves cannot be repositioned arbitrarily after installation. Adjustable shelves, on the other hand, can have their installation height changed as needed at any time.

III. Joining Structure of Partitions with Top (Surface), Bottom, or Shelves

Partitions can longitudinally divide the cabinet interior. Partitions may be constructed from faced particleboard, faced blockboard, faced hollow board, or solid wood veneer plywood. Partitions are commonly installed using dowel joints. Two round dowels are pre-inserted into each end of the partition. Corresponding round holes are then drilled in the top, bottom, or shelves at matching positions. They are assembled by joining these components together.

IV. Back Panel Assembly Structure

The back panel connects the side panels, top panel, bottom panel, shelves, and partitions into a stable, integrated unit. The back panel can be installed using a tongue-and-groove joint structure or a groove-dowel joint structure. The tongue-and-groove joint structure is easy to disassemble and assemble, making it widely used. The groove-dowel joint structure, which cannot be disassembled, is less commonly used.

Technical requirements for backboard panels: (1) Three-layer plywood or 3-5mm thick hard fibers can be used, or solid wood spliced boards can be used. For backboards that are prone to collision and require aesthetic appeal, faced hollow boards or faced solid boards can be used. (2) The side of the backplate must not be exposed and should be installed in a concealed manner. (3) The cutting edge panel is suitable for thin back plates, and the cutting depth of the side plate is the sum of the thickness of the back plate and the pressure strip. The pressure strips should be made of plywood, fiberboard or solid wood strips with a width of 25-40mm. (4) The double panel method is suitable for thick backplates. The lap joint of the backplate should be thinned to about 10mm to ensure the strength of the cut. (5) The back plate for the tenon and groove installation method should be installed simultaneously during the cabinet assembly, but expansion joints for the back plate in the groove should be reserved to prevent deformation when the back plate expands and damage to the cabinet assembly structure. (6) The prefabricated wooden frame backboard can form a flat back, which is suitable for cabinets with large spans. The middle support of the wooden frame can be utilized to enhance the rigidity and flatness of the thin backboard. Benefiting the industry, with the intention of sharing.
